The term "USB Type" can be interpreted as three different things:
Connector for USB data cable port
The port where the cable is inserted
The cable itself
For the first and second cases, USB Type describes the physical shape of the connector or interface.
Sometimes a USB connector is called a "male" connector because it plugs into a "female connector" interface. The different types of USB connectors are as follows:
USB 2.0: Type-A, Type-B, Type-B Mini, Type-B Micro
USB 3.0: Type-A, Type-B, Type-C, Type-B Micro
USB Type-A Mini:
Allows portable (OTG) peripherals, such as smartphones and tablets, to act as host devices for keyboards and mice
USB Type-B Mini:
Can be used in digital cameras, external hard drives, USB hubs and other devices
USB Type-A Micro:
Used on USB portable (OTG) devices such as smartphones and tablets
USB Type-B Micro:
As the standard charging plug and interface for current Android devices
For example, USB Type-A to USB Type-C cable. If one end of the cable is a Type-A connector, it is usually the first type. The second is the shape of the connector that connects the device. Some cables have the same connector at both ends, which will be named USB Type-C to Type-C cable (for example).
For example, for USB Type-C, neither end is a standard USB type A connector. So, for example, a cable with both USB Type A and USB Type C connectors is a USB Type-C data cable.
If both connectors are USB Type-A, it is a USB Type-A data cable (or a USB male-to-male data cable, or more simply, a USB cable).
