In 2011, British researchers tested 63 million mobile phones, and the results showed that 14.7 million mobile phones had a health risk. The average mobile phone carries 18 times more bacteria than a public restroom.
With the current COVID-19, mobile phones are the most frequently used in our daily life. They are the real "king of poison"!
A paper in the Journal of Hospital Infection pointed out that coronavirus can live on the surface of inanimate objects such as metal, glass, or plastic for up to 9 days, and if there are bacteria on the phone, that means it will be transferred to your face after you touch it.
Is it correct to disinfect the mobile phone with alcohol during the critical period?
Previously, mobile phone accessories manufacturers including Apple have stated that it is not recommended that users directly use detergents with irritating solvents for mobile phone cleaning.
The reason is that some cleaners or disinfectant wipes may contain a higher concentration of alcohol. The protective film coating of the inner film of the mobile phone screen will be soluble in solvents such as alcohol. The aging of the screen will cause serious consequences such as plaque, flower screen, and discoloration on the screen.
However, Apple has updated the device cleaning guide on the official website recently, indicating that users can use "70% isopropyl alcohol wipes" or "Clorox disinfecting wipes" to gently wipe the hard and non-porous product surfaces, such as display screens, keyboards, or other external surfaces.
The "70% isopropyl alcohol" mentioned here refers to a topical antiseptic on the market in the United States. It is similar to ethanol, also a kind of medical alcohol, but in addition to 70% concentration, there are also 60% or up to 91%.
And what we see in supermarkets and pharmacies is more like 75% alcohol, so pay attention to this when using mobile phones!
Huawei also made a “cleaning instruction” on the official page. Users can spray an appropriate amount of alcohol on a soft lint-free cloth, and then gently wipe the phone screen, back shell, and sides, but excluding the phone holes, gaps, and flash area.
After wiping is completed, leave the phone for 5 minutes and wait for the alcohol on the surface to evaporate.
Google also recommends using a soft lint-free cloth to wipe the phone and most of the time without using water. If the screen is stained, you can use special screen wipes or lens cleaner, and the side of the phone and the back can also use wet wipes moistened with soapy water.
For the disinfection part, Google said that users can use ordinary household disinfectant wipes or 70% isopropyl alcohol wipes, but cleaning wipes containing bleach are not allowed.
Samsung’s official customer service advises that “use a soft cotton cloth or glasses cloth to wipe”. If the stains on the screen are not easy to remove, you can use a slightly wet cotton cloth, but not recommended to use alcohol to wipe the screen.
Based on the recommendations of several major manufacturers, the simplest and safest method of cleaning and disinfection is to use a soft lint-free cloth or microfiber cloth, together with clean water to wipe the screen.
If you need deeper disinfection, you can use disinfectant wipes with a concentration of less than 70% alcohol to wipe. But it’s still recommended not to wipe excessively, will also cause damage to the screen.
In addition, there are some small details that need to be paid attention to. Do not spray liquid directly on the mobile phone, should spray it on a soft cloth first and then wipe it.
In addition, don't use paper to replace the soft lint-free cloth. The surface of the paper is rough. If you rub it like this for a long time, there is a risk of scratches.
After wiping the phone with a clean wipe, better use a dry lint-free cloth for a second wipe to avoid leaving water stains on the glass.
Dirt in the gaps between earpiece, speaker, and interface, do not poke with sharp objects such as toothpicks and paper clips, it is possible to damage the interface contacts or the earpiece easily. It is better to use a cotton swab to solve.
Cleaning your phone does not mean that you can completely isolate the virus, but don’t be lazy at critical times.
